What is good Website Design? Design versus functionality is probably the most important factor when designing a website. The first time you view a website, what do you look for? I suppose that depends on the purpose of your visit. But, once you have loaded the page, are you going to stay and explore the website because it looks interesting, or are you going to leave because you can’t find the navigation buttons?

Graphic designers tend to be over creative with large and frustratingly slow loading websites, whilst web developers generally create websites that are purely functional and terrible to look at! (Especially in web design in South Africa!) Good website designers are able to find a balance between the two.

As a graphic designer, I have in the past, made the mistake of overcompensating on visual appeal. By finding guidance in design magazines and blogs, like computer arts and Smashing Magazine, I have been able to overcome this common error. Look for inspiration on the web – there is plenty to choose from.

  1. Which, of the above, is the best place (for price and study Material /info/course) to study a short course for graphic design? I only have evenings and live in the country side and have 3 children?!
